Coventry booked their place in the semi-finals with a gritty 28-25 victory over Hartpury at the Nick Newbold, overcoming a disjointed first-half display to take control after the break. In difficult conditions and against stubborn opposition, Alex Rae’s side showed patience and physicality when it mattered most, with Morgan Strong’s brace and a decisive late score from Murray Davidson proving enough to get the job done.
With rolling clouds overhead, Harry Bazalgette sent the ball into the Coventry 22 to get us underway. Tom Bacon returned the kick immediately, but it was Hartpury who enjoyed the first meaningful territory of the afternoon. Coventry’s defence, however, matched up well and absorbed the early pressure confidently, Sam Maunder eventually forcing a knock-on.
The visitors struck first through the boot of Bazalgette, whose penalty from halfway gave Hartpury a 3-0 lead. Coventry’s attack had looked sluggish in the opening exchanges, but three consecutive penalties finally gave the hosts a foothold in the game. Kicking aggressively to the corner paid off as Morgan Strong powered over from close range for the game’s opening try. 7-3.
Hartpury responded well to the restart and looked determined to reclaim momentum, but again Coventry’s defence stood firm. Tom Ball eventually forced the turnover, sparking a dangerous counterattack that only just fell short of the try line. It was a much-needed spark for the home side.
Bazalgette reduced the deficit with another penalty before Hartpury moved back in front shortly after. Ollie Allsopp crashed over from five metres out following sustained pressure, leaving Coventry trailing 13-7 after a frustrating spell.
Coventry attempted to respond immediately. Api Bavadra, Jack Reeves and David Opoku-Fordjour combined brilliantly to carve open the Hartpury defence, only for the final pass to hit the turf at the crucial moment.
An overhit kick from Bazalgette handed Coventry possession back deep inside the Hartpury half as the game drifted towards half-time. Strong continued to lead from the front with another powerful carry, but Hartpury’s defence held firm and earned a scrum put in.
With the clock in the red, Coventry delivered a huge moment before the interval. The driving maul functioned superbly, and Morgan Strong crashed over for his second try of the half. Tommy Mathews narrowly missed the conversion, but Coventry headed into the break just one point behind after a half that had largely failed to click. 12-13.
The second half began positively for Coventry, though handling errors continued to halt promising attacks. Eventually, pressure at the scrum produced a crucial penalty against the Hartpury feed, and Mathews calmly split the posts to edge Coventry back in front. 15-13.
As tensions grew, Josh Thomas extended the lead with another well-struck penalty. 18-13. Hartpury continued battling and earned a scrum penalty of their own, but their attacking lineout malfunctioned inside the Cov 22, allowing Coventry to escape.
The contest still felt finely poised, with one score likely to decide it. That decisive moment arrived through Murray Davidson. After already threatening with a powerful carry moments earlier, the replacement forward burst through again, this time finishing brilliantly after an excellent pass from Sam Maunder. The score finally gave Coventry breathing space at 25-13.
Hartpury’s discipline began to slip as frustration crept in, and Josh Thomas punished them further with another penalty to stretch the lead to 28-13.
The visitors did manage two late tries through Ollie Allsopp and Bradley Denty, but they proved little more than consolation scores as Coventry closed out a hard-earned victory. 28-25
With their place in the final four secured, Coventry now turn their attention to Bedford Blues and a Friday night semi-final showdown with a spot in the Championship final on the line. Rae’s men suffered a narrow defeat at Goldington Road during the regular season, but with momentum building Coventry will be confident of rewriting the script this time around.
