Coventry edged out late as Cornish Pirates snatch victory in testing conditions

In a game that swung throughout, Coventry were left frustrated on the south coast as Cornish Pirates snatched a late victory. It was a performance that saw the players dig deep in tough conditions, but they ultimately came up just short.

Coventry made a positive start, earning an early scrum inside the Pirates half, but it was the hosts who struck first. A dominant shove won a penalty, and from the resulting territory Robson kicked long before the Pirates finished clinically in the phases that followed.

Coventry’s response was immediate. A scintillating backs move released David Opoku-Fordjour, who combined quick hands with a clever grubber off his own knee before regathering to score. 7-7.

As the weather worsened, handling became increasingly important, and both sides struggled for control. Coventry threatened through Allan Ferrie after a strong break into the 22, but the final pass didn’t stick. A handful of minutes later, Tom Bacon’s kick over the top looked dangerous, but it was dealt with well by Price-Thomas.

Midway through the half, the game remained finely balanced. That changed when Robson’s excellent 50:22 put Pirates back on the front foot. Shortly after, Matt Johnson was sent to the sin bin for playing the ball on the floor. The hosts capitalised on the numerical advantage immediately, with Morgan Nelson finishing a well-worked lineout maul. 12-7.

Coventry managed the remainder of the sin-bin period well, with Tommy Mathews adding a penalty from long range. With half time approaching, however, a misfired lineout deep in their own 22 proved costly, as Pirates pounced. Through quick hands the lead was extended by Harry Newlson. 19-10 at the break. Plenty of chances for Coventry but the accuracy would have to be improved to come out on top.

The second half followed a familiar pattern- Coventry creating chances but struggling with accuracy in difficult conditions. A flowing move involving Ferrie, Bacon, and Sam Harding broke deep into Pirates territory, only for the ball to be lost just short.

Eventually, the pressure told. From a well-worked lineout maul, Eliot Salt powered over to close the gap. 19-17.

Momentum was firmly Coventry’s now. Another penalty sent them back into the 22, and this time Murray Davidson finished at the back of a dominant driving maul to give the visitors the lead. 24-19.

Having been second best for much of the half, Pirates found a late surge. Backed by the home crowd, they built phases with purpose before Charlie Rice forced his way over to retake the lead in the closing minutes. 26-24.

There was still time for a final twist. A late penalty for sealing the ruck handed Coventry one last opportunity. But the crucial lineout was lost, bringing a frustrating end to a contest that had been within their grasp. 29-24 the final score after a late penalty converted by Robson.

Coventry end the regular season with Worcester Warriors’ visit to the Nick Newbold. In front of what promises to be a packed out crowd it will be an important step to send us into the playoffs on a good footing.

There were, however, positives to take, not least the involvement of two academy products. Sam Harding made his first start for the club and delivered a performance in line with the demands of Champ Rugby in the second row, while 18-year-old Will Dorrell - who recently signed his first senior academy contract - came off the bench to make his debut, marking what will be the beginning of a promising career in blue and white.
