L R ‘’ Bomber ‘’ Evans
The Club has been deeply saddened by the new of the death of Roy ‘’ Bomber’’ Evans.
Having suffered increasingly poor health in his final years, ‘’ Bomber’’ died in hospital early on the evening of Wednesday 12th August 2026 aged 90.
Known to all who knew him simply as , ‘’ Bomber’’, Leonard Roy Evans was a member of the great Coventry sides of the 1950’s/60s, whilst also retaining his superb in depth knowledge of both the club and the game right up until the time of his death. Supported by his wife of 59 years, Jill, and son Simon, ‘’ Bomber’’, although struggling, was able to attend the Nick Newbold Stadium right up to the end of last season.
‘’Bomber’’ was a Coventry playing member for fully 10 years from 1956/57 to 1966/67. He made 205 senior appearances for ‘’Cov’’, scoring over 50 tries. Most of those appearances came at blind side wing forward, although on occasions the number eight position was occupied. The same also occurring whilst representing Warwickshire during their successful Championship winning years.
During National Service, ‘’Bomber’’ joined and played for the Royal Air Force, whilst also representing the Combined Services. From that time in his playing career, ‘’ Bomber’’ retained the life long honour of having captained the RAF team that defeated Coventry ; in those days the two met in March each season and it was only the third time that result had occurred. In the days now of professional and league Rugby, never likely to be repeated, but it was a result at Coundon Road that forever brought a smile to ‘’Bomber’s face!
Following retirement from playing, ‘’ Bomber’’ served the Club as a Committee man and later notably as President.
Up to the time of his passing, ‘’ Bomber’’ had retained the honour of being the Club’s oldest surviving former player. He really had suffered very poor health for a considerable time, but those of us who knew him well can recall how proud be was in reaching the grand age of 90.
To Jill and to Simon and daughter Nicky, we send our fondest good wishes at this particularly sad time.
RIP dear ‘’ Bomber’’
