The squad certainly improved on their performance from the prior league fixtures. With some high scoring games and close encounters, they again played their rugby in a positive, competitive and good-spirited manner. Scoring an average of 3 tries per match in week one(given that one match was a bye) and 3.4 in week two!
Match 1: Coventry RFC vs Banbury – Win 6-4
Coventry opened their campaign against Banbury with some flair. Settling in very quickly with the squad making accurate passing and enabling some well worked tries.
Banbury fought back and put us under some pressure in what we believed would be a solid victory earlier in the match. Clean handling and well-worked tries made the difference in the two teams by full time. Our first win in this competition, this helped propel our sprits into the next match!
Match 2: Coventry RFC vs Northampton Saints 1 - Win 3-2
The Saints played with some vigour, perhaps a bit more vigorous than we expected but once again Coventry were resilient, coming away with a win, landing our second victory of the day. Great passing and sterling efforts in defence, kept Saints from gaining a draw.
Many thanks to Raj who provided snacks and energy drinks, allowed for a mini celebration of our 2nd win!
Match 3: Coventry RFC vs Brackley – Defeat 1 - 3
After the break, top of the table Brackley proved too much for Coventry although once again a competitive match. Substitutions at half time seems to be a a good formula for Coventry, remaining onside was tough at times with some slick passes executed by Brackley. Great leadership from Chris helped us keep things tight but victory came in the end to the top of the table side.
Match 4: Coventry RFC vs Northampton Saints 2 - Draw 4-4
A bit of a niggly match against another Saints team but we held out for the draw. The vigour shown by Saints 1 team earlier certainly existed to a high degree with Saints 2! A naughty dropped shoulder into Paul’s chest, in the second half, marred the spirit of the match. He however recovered well to appear again in the final fixture. Noted that Callum, tournament organiser, quickly substituted two of their more heavy handed players. The draw matching that of the previous fixture in March.
Match 5: Coventry RFC vs Leamington - Loss 4-5
The final outing came against a sharp attacking Leamington team, with some dubious scores called out to the referee. However Coventry were again resilient with some great handling throughout, indeed praised highly by two of the Leamington players at the end of the game.
Overall Summary
Across four fixtures, once again Coventry RFC Walking Rugby gained invaluable game time and another important step forward in their development as a team.
Well done to all who took part:
