After the disappointment of last weekend's 38-35 defeat at Rotherham Titans, the Blue & Whites responded in emphatic fashion, producing a performance full of attacking ambition and finishing with 73 points on the board.

Coventry led 33-26 at half-time after a remarkable opening 40 minutes, before six further tries after the interval saw them pull decisively clear.

Jordon Poole and Jack Reeves both crossed twice, while Tom Bacon, Matt McNab, Api Bavadra, Morgan Strong, Josh Barton, Dan Green and David Opoku-Fordjour also found the try line.

Bruce Houston added nine conversions for an 18-point personal contribution.

Pirates make the early running

Cornish Pirates made the brighter start and were rewarded inside the opening 10 minutes.

A period of pressure inside the Coventry 22 culminated in Dan Hiscocks crossing for the opening try, with Arwel Robson adding the conversion to make it 7-0.

Coventry's response was immediate.

The home side began to build pressure through their forward pack, with the rolling maul proving an important weapon throughout the afternoon.

The first Coventry breakthrough came when Tom Bacon finished an attacking move to bring the Blue & Whites back into the contest.

Houston added the conversion and the scores were level at 7-7.

Poole powers over

Coventry were now beginning to impose themselves.

Another period of pressure inside the Pirates' 22 saw the home pack go to work, and Jordon Poole emerged from the maul to score Coventry's second try.

Houston converted and Coventry moved into a 14-7 lead.

The Blue & Whites then produced another attacking highlight.

Tommy Mathews' cross-field kick was expertly gathered by Matt McNab, who showed composure to finish in the corner and mark his Coventry debut with a try.

Houston's conversion made it 21-7.

McNab had already been prominent in Coventry's attacking play, and his combination with the backline was beginning to cause the visitors considerable problems.

Bavadra adds a fourth

The pressure continued.

Coventry moved the ball through the phases before Api Bavadra broke through to score beneath the posts.

Houston added another two points and Coventry had opened up a 28-7 advantage.

The forward pack continued to make valuable metres through its carries and maul, with Coventry repeatedly able to turn pressure into territory and territory into points.

Then came another powerful close-range score.

Morgan Strong emerged from the Coventry maul to force his way over for the fifth home try.

Houston was unable to add the conversion on this occasion, leaving Coventry 33-7 ahead.

Five Coventry tries and four conversions had produced 33 points.

Pirates fight back

Cornish Pirates, however, refused to allow the game to disappear from their grasp.

Milo Hallam finished a sustained attacking spell to give the visitors their second try, reducing the deficit to 33-12.

Coventry then lost Morgan Strong to the sin bin, giving the Pirates an opportunity to attack with an extra player.

They took it.

Alessandro Heaney crossed for the visitors' third try, with Robson converting to make it 33-19.

The Pirates continued to apply pressure as half-time approached, and Harry Ascherl finished another attack deep into added time.

Robson converted again.

Suddenly, after trailing 33-7, the Pirates had reduced the deficit to just seven points.

The opening 40 minutes had produced nine tries and a remarkable swing in momentum.

Poole restores the momentum

Coventry knew the next score would be crucial and quickly went looking for it.

Once again, the home side found the answer through their captain.

Poole crossed for his second try of the afternoon and Houston converted, moving Coventry back to a two-score advantage at 40-26.

The score settled the home side and the Pirates' discipline then began to deteriorate.

Reeves and Barton extend the lead

Jack Reeves was next to cross.

The winger finished another Coventry attack and Houston added the conversion, taking the score to 47-26.

Coventry continued to press, and Josh Barton then crossed for the eighth Coventry try of the afternoon.

This time there was no conversion, leaving the score 52-26.

The Blue & Whites were now beginning to pull away decisively.

Green and Opoku-Fordjour add further scores

Dan Green then got his name on the scoresheet.

After another sustained Coventry attack, Green finished the move for his first try of the season.

Houston converted and Coventry moved to 59-26.

There was still no let-up.

David Opoku-Fordjour was increasingly influential after coming on from the bench and finished another flowing Coventry attack.

Houston converted again.

The score was now 66-26, with Coventry having scored five second-half tries.

Pirates battle back

To their credit, Cornish Pirates continued to attack.

Matt Pritchard crossed for the visitors' fifth try of the afternoon and Robson added the conversion, making it 66-33.

Jamie Clark then followed with another Pirates try.

Robson converted once more and suddenly the scoreboard read 66-40.

The visitors had scored two tries in quick succession, but Coventry still had time to produce one final response.

Reeves completes the scoring

With the clock running down, Coventry went in search of one final score.

They found it through Jack Reeves.

The winger completed his brace with Coventry's 11th try of the afternoon.

Houston added the conversion to take the final score to 73-40.

The second-half scoring sequence tells the story of Coventry's attacking surge:

40-26 → 47-26 → 52-26 → 59-26 → 66-26 → 66-33 → 66-40 → 73-40.

It was a remarkable spell of attacking rugby from the Blue & Whites, who had turned a seven-point half-time advantage into a 33-point victory.

Coventry's 73 points came from 11 tries and nine conversions, while the Pirates' 40 points came from six tries and five conversions.

The result also showcased the variety in Coventry's attack.

The forwards provided a powerful platform through the rolling maul, while the backs repeatedly found space and produced the finishing touches.
