Coventry Rugby Announces 2026 Senior Academy Intake as Four New Players Progress to Senior Environment
The quartet represent another important step in the club’s commitment to developing the next generation of players from across Coventry, the West Midlands and beyond, with each player having impressed throughout their time in the academy setup. Their progression comes alongside the continued development of the club’s inaugural Senior Academy intake, whose first year in the programme has laid a strong foundation for the long-term growth of Coventry Rugby’s player pathway.
New Senior Academy Intake - 2026/27
Elefio Vulimai-Igiladi
A trailblazer as the first player signed from club college partner St Regis School, Stoke-on-Trent-born Elefio Vulimai-Igiladi joined the academy programme as an Under-17 18 months ago and has developed rapidly during his time at the club.
Now recognised as an abrasive ball carrier and dominant defensive presence, Vulimai-Igiladi has consistently showcased his physicality and work ethic throughout the pathway. Coaches are excited by the qualities he will bring into the senior environment as he continues his development.
Charlie Stallard
A standout performer in The King’s School Gloucester’s National Schools Vase Final victory at Twickenham Stadium last season, Charlie Stallard arrives as one of the academy’s most exciting backline prospects.
The Bredon Star RFC product, and current Cheltenham Tiger, has excelled throughout his Under-18 campaign, impressing as a highly skilled utility back with an outstanding kicking game and the footwork to unlock defences. The club looks forward to supporting the next stage of his rugby journey as he transitions into the senior academy.
Cornelius Nartey
Hailing from Newport Salop RFC, Shropshire and Adams’ Grammar School, Cornelius Nartey becomes the latest talented second row to emerge from Coventry Rugby’s academy pathway.
Following in the footsteps of last year’s academy graduate Sam Harding, Nartey has established himself as a hugely physical forward with excellent defensive instincts and outstanding lineout ability. His athleticism and strength over the ball mark him out as another exciting prospect for the future.
Will Dorrell
Under-18 captain Will Dorrell joins the senior academy after an outstanding season that has already seen him attend an England Under-20 training camp and make his first-team debut against Cornish Pirates while still representing The King’s School Worcester.
Dorrell will continue his development at Coventry Rugby on a dual-career pathway alongside valued club sponsors Bromwich Hardy, combining his studies with his rugby commitments as part of a long-term programme with the club.
2025 Senior Academy Progression
As the club welcomes the new 2026 intake, it also reflects proudly on the progress made by the inaugural Senior Academy cohort, who joined the programme at the end of the 2024/25 campaign. The first year of the Senior Academy has provided an excellent platform for a number of young players to transition into senior rugby, gaining valuable experience through first-team training, senior appearances and extensive loan opportunities across the National Leagues.
Coventry Rugby is pleased to confirm that Taio Varndell, Sam Gibson, Drew Johnson and Sam Harding will continue into the second year of their Senior Academy contracts with the club.
Drew Johnson has enjoyed a stellar first season in senior rugby. Graduating from the U18s as a robust, hard-working back rower, he has developed significantly across his first year, gaining valuable experience on loan in the National Leagues with Oxford Harlequins and later Syston RFC. Alongside training full-time with the first team, Drew has played over 20 games of National League rugby this year, an outstanding return that positions him strongly heading into next season.
Sam Harding, despite spending a large part of the season sidelined with a hamstring complaint, has finished the year strongly. His loan outings with Oxford Harlequins RFC in National League 2 were interrupted by injury, but he returned impressively, including an 80-minute performance against Cornish Pirates and involvement in the final five Championship matchday squads of the season. This marks a standout achievement within the Senior Academy and the club is excited to see him continue his trajectory into pre-season 2026.
Taio Varndell is currently playing with Shute Shield side Southern Districts Rugby Club in Australia to maximise game time, where he has continued his excellent try-scoring form. Highlights this season include his try-scoring appearance for England U19 against Japan, as well as his memorable 50-metre try against London Scottish earlier in the year.
Sam Gibson has also had an outstanding maiden season in senior rugby. Two senior appearances away from home against Cambridge and Bedford Blues are exceptional achievements for a tighthead still only 18 years of age. Combined with impressive loan spells at Newport Salop RFC and latterly Macclesfield RFC in National League 2, Sam has laid an excellent foundation and will be hoping to push for further senior appearances in 2026/27.
Departing Senior Academy Players
As part of the natural evolution of the programme, Coventry Rugby also says farewell to several members of the original 2025 Senior Academy cohort.
Joe Johnston, Leamington RFC’s own and a Coventry local, will move on ahead of the 2026/27 season to pursue his academic studies at Cardiff Met University. Joe has spent much of the year on loan at Banbury RFC and has been an energetic and committed member of the first-team training environment throughout his time in the programme. The club thanks Joe for his contribution and wishes him every success in his next chapter.
Earlier in the season, Matty Thomas, Will Smith and Harry Ingram also departed the Senior Academy programme to pursue other opportunities, and the club thanks each of them for their efforts during their time at Coventry Rugby.
The continued progression of the 2025 cohort, alongside the arrival of four new players into the Senior Academy for 2026/27, highlights the strength of Coventry Rugby’s development pathway. Everyone at the club is hugely excited about what this latest intake can bring in the years ahead and hopes this group can continue to blaze a trail for aspiring rugby players from Coventry, the West Midlands and beyond on the pathway to professional rugby.
