The experienced scrum-half will continue in blue and white after committing his future to the club for another year, extending a relationship that has seen him become one of Coventry Rugby's most influential players.

Barton first joined Coventry in 2020 and enjoyed two outstanding campaigns before earning a move to Premiership side Newcastle Falcons. Returning to the club ahead of the 2024/25 season, the 28-year-old has once again become a key figure within the squad, bringing leadership, experience and composure to the heart of Coventry's attack.

Across his two spells with the club, Barton has made 80 appearances, scoring 20 tries, while also adding two conversions for a total of 104 points. His sharp game management, competitive edge and eye for the try line have made him one of the Championship's most consistent scrum-halves.

Head Coach Alex Rae believes Barton's influence extends far beyond his performances on matchdays.

"Josh really cares about the club and the team, and that shines through on a daily basis. He's a real competitor, experienced and understands how we want the game played. He sets brilliant standards in training and that rubs off on others around him."

Speaking after signing his new deal, Barton said:

"I'm extremely happy to be staying at Cov for another year. The club and people have given me a lot throughout my career and I'm grateful to be able to continue on the journey. The potential we have ahead is huge and hopefully I can play my part in helping us continue to move forward and be successful this season."

Barton's re-signing completes Coventry Rugby's retained squad for the 2026/27 season, with the club delighted to have secured the futures of so many key members of Alex Rae's squad. Retaining the core of the group that has grown together over recent seasons provides a strong platform to build on, with the unity, togetherness and culture within the squad continuing to strengthen as Coventry looks ahead to an exciting new campaign.
