Born in Bell Green and raised on rugby in Coventry, 22-year-old Coby Stanton-Ford has gone from preparing the pitch to delivering a match-winning moment for his hometown club in a matter of months.
With seconds remaining away at Doncaster Knights, Coventry Rugby turned to the bench one final time. For Coby Stanton-Ford, it was another opportunity to make his mark. Coming onto the field in the closing moments, the front-rower scored from a pick-and-go to level the game, before a successful conversion sealed a dramatic victory for Coventry.
It was a remarkable moment for a player whose journey to the first team began away from the spotlight, working on the very pitch he would soon be playing on.
Just months earlier, Coby had been part of Coventry Rugby’s grounds staff over the summer, balancing his work at the club with his ambition to make it as a rugby player. Alongside his duties, he continued to pursue his dream with Broadstreet RFC and Coventry Rugby Academy U23s, working hard for an opportunity to take the next step.
That opportunity came during pre-season, when Coby was asked to help with first-team training numbers. Having spent his days preparing the stadium, he suddenly found himself preparing to train alongside the senior squad.
“I used to go out before training to put the posts up and then go about my usual business. Now, I'm still putting up the posts, but it's straight back on the field for training.”

What began as an opportunity to help out quickly became something more. After making appearances during pre-season away against RGC and at home against Ospreys, Coby continued to impress, showing his willingness to learn and develop every day.

For a player born and raised in the city, the chance to represent Coventry Rugby was about more than simply stepping up a level. It was an opportunity to pull on the shirt of his hometown club and turn years of ambition into reality.
On 27 September, that dream moved a step closer when Coby was announced as a senior academy player for Coventry Rugby.
“Growing up in Coventry and now having the chance to represent my home city’s club is unbelievable. I never thought an opportunity like this would come my way, but I’m incredibly grateful to the club and Broadstreet for helping me achieve this dream.”
Just two days later, he was named on the bench for Coventry’s opening game of the season. In the 60th minute, he made his first-team debut, marking another significant milestone in a journey that had gathered momentum in a remarkably short space of time.
Since then, Coby has continued to earn his place, featuring in all four subsequent Champ Rugby matchday squads and gaining valuable experience within the senior environment.

Then came the trip to Doncaster.
With the game hanging in the balance and only seconds remaining, Coby found himself at the heart of the action. His pick-and-go try brought Coventry level, setting up the conversion that would secure a dramatic away victory.
For the young front-rower, it was another step forward in a story that has already delivered some extraordinary moments. From laying the foundations for matchday to becoming the player making the difference on the pitch, his rise is a reminder of what can happen when hard work meets opportunity.
From ground staff to game-winner.
Coby Stanton-Ford’s story is a special one. Born and raised in Coventry, he is now part of a squad determined to keep pushing the limits in Champ Rugby, having earned his place through dedication, persistence and a willingness to seize his chance.
At just 22, he has already experienced a first-team debut and a match-winning moment on the road. And if the past few months are anything to go by, this is only the beginning.
