Coventry Rugby are delighted to announce that 21-year-old Coby Stanton Ford has joined the club’s Senior Academy.
Coby’s route into the senior playing group is one that perfectly captures the opportunities rugby can provide.
A Broadstreet player and member of the Coventry Rugby U23 Academy programme, Coby has remained close to the club in more ways than one, working in Coventry Rugby’s Facilities Department and helping look after the ground on a day-to-day basis.
His opportunity to step into the senior playing environment came somewhat unexpectedly.
Brought into training to help cover numbers, Coby quickly showed that he was more than capable of holding his own. His performances in training earned him further opportunities, including appearances against Ospreys and RGC, where he continued to impress and put himself firmly in the coaches’ thinking.
That progression has now culminated in Coby earning a place in the Senior Academy and the chance to pursue his rugby dream with his hometown club.
Speaking on the opportunity, Coby said:
“Growing up in Coventry and now having the chance to represent my home city’s club is unbelievable. I never thought an opportunity like this would come my way, but I’m incredibly grateful to the club and Broadstreet for helping me achieve this dream.”
Senior Academy coach Alex Rae has been impressed by Coby’s attitude since stepping into the group.
“It’s been fantastic welcoming Coby into the playing group and what a story — another Cov kid!
“Seeing him come in from nowhere, embrace his chance and do it with a smile on his face was so refreshing for all of us.
“He’s got a real chance now to do something in rugby and we’re really excited to help him and see where that can take him.”
