By John Wilkinson PRIDE in what they do will keep Coventry’s players pushing for more from themselves until the very last day of the season.
A bonus point win at Caldy this Saturday would wrap up the National League One title with five games to go, but head coach Nick Walshe says the hard work will continue whatever the outcome.
“I must admit after the Darlington game it was a little tricky to keep their feet on the ground,” said Walshe.
“But you can just see from the performance against Old Elthamians how much we talk about pride in our performance every week, pride in each other, in the shirt and in the club, and not slipping up again.
“It might happen, but whether we’re in touching distance of the title or have mathematically won the league, we’ve still got a performance to give each week and still got to do it for the fans and for ourselves.
“It can be tough, the boys are in a good frame of mind, but that’s part of coaching – you’ve got to get them back focused at training, get them working hard and waiting for the next challenge.”
Saturday’s performance against OEs was a prime example with two more club league records falling in the 48-13 win – the ‘points for’ tally for the season of 1,018 gong past the previous best and James Stokes scoring his 18th try of the season to beat Andy Smallwood’s long-standing individual record.
Said Walshe: “I’ve got a lot of respect for Old Elthamians, they’ve come up to this league and done really well, so we knew it was going to be tough.
“We prepared well and I’ve got to give credit to the boys, they put in a fantastic performance once again.
“In those conditions you’ve got to get that go-forward and our forwards did that for us, and I thought the backs were outstanding and sharp in poor conditions once again.
“We go out each week to score as many tries as possible and concede the least amount as possible, to be as ruthless as we can, playing the right kind of rugby.
“If we score tries, that’s great, and we’ll just keep going, doing what we do, for another six games.
“It’s great to beat these records and obviously I’m very proud of that. We’ll just keep trying to push it as far as we can so it doesn’t get broken again – we’ll try again next year, but it might be difficult!”
