We all know that cancer is one of the biggest killers in the UK and anything we can do to reduce our risk has to be a good thing to do. For men, the most common form is prostrate cancer, affecting 1 in 8 men in the UK – a staggering statistic.

Alex Rae and the coaching team at Coventry Rugby are giving their support to an initiative to raise awareness and to encourage men over 40 to get tested. According to Alex “ Men are often not the best when it comes to going to the Doctor and yet we know that diseases like prostrate cancer need to be caught early. I’m sure we can all think of friends, colleagues and high profile sportsmen who have experienced this disease and I’d encourage all men over 40 to get a simple blood test in order to ensure they are clear or to get treatment if it’s needed. It takes very little time to do and can literally be a life saver.”

With 80% of early cancers having no symptoms, it’s a proven fact that early detection saves lives. The primary test for prostrate cancer is the PSA (blood) test and, whilst all men over 50 are entitled to this, GPs don’t generally make men aware that they are eligible for it and early diagnosis opportunities can be missed.

The clear message from medical experts is that, caught early enough, prostate cancer can be cured.

Coventry Rugby Club is therefore teaming up with a local charity, Coventry & North Warwickshire Prostate Cancer Support Group to hold a Prostate Cancer Health Awareness event at the Butts Park Arena.

We are delighted to provide the opportunity to have a PSA test in the Millerchip Suite at the Butts Park Arena on Saturday 22nd February from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. You are asked to book a 15-minute time slot in advance: this saves time on the day and minimises queuing. Book online at cnw.mypsatests.org.uk or via the QR code below. A £20 registration fee is required to help cover then charity’s equipment and processing costs.
