Saturday’s win over Ampthill may not have confirmed a Championship Cup quarter final spot for Coventry Rugby, but it went a long way towards it, and with other results going the club’s way a home tie is up for grabs over the next fortnight, too!
Ampthill’s losing bonus point means that if they get bonus point wins over Ealing and Bedford and Coventry get nothing from their own games against the same opposition then it will be the Bedfordshire team who will finish second.
But with three wins and three bonus points Coventry do not just have second place in the pool in their own hands, but a prized place as one of the four top seeds for the knockout stages.
Following the last round of matches the quarter final rankings are currently as follows:
- Newcastle Falcons (19 points), 2. Ealing Trailfinders (19), 3. London Scottish (19), 4. COVENTRY RUGBY (15), 5. Jersey Reds (12), 6. Cornish Pirates (11), 7. Nottingham (11), 8. Doncaster Knights (10)
This week’s fixtures show why Coventry still need to be keeping focused on getting a win at Goldington Road.
Pool 1 – Ampthill v Ealing, Bedford v Coventry
Pool 2 – Doncaster v Newcastle, Jersey v Hartpury
Pool 3 – Cornish Pirates v Yorkshire Carnegie, Nottingham v London Scottish
